SEOUL, May 11, 2023 – One of the major highlights of the 85th AIPS Congress in Seoul was the approval of the revised AIPS Statutes, which have “more modern regulations that will guide our association in the coming years”, according to the AIPS President Gianni Merlo.

After more than two years, the process of revising the Statutes has now been completed in Seoul, where 65 out of the 68 countries eligible to vote said yes to the following question: Do you approve the Revision of the AIPS Statutes and By-laws?

Before the voting exercise, Congress listened to a presentation by AIPS lawyer Jean-Philippe Rochat via Zoom. In Seoul, Rochat was represented by Riccardo Coppa, who also answered questions delegates asked about the statutes. Both of them highlighted the most significant improvements of the revision, which include a clear distinction between the AIPS Statutes and AIPS By-laws, provisions to adopt new practices for sports organizations like the possibility for virtual meetings and electronic votes as well as the abolishment of the Bureau.

It was also pointed out that the Statutes now have the reference to the “Ethics and Disciplinary Commission”, which was previously just “Ethics Commission”, with a mission and function similar to other major sports organizations.

During the 84th Congress in Rome in October 2022, the progress made on the revision of the AIPS Statutes was discussed, then at the AIPS EC meeting in February 2023, an updated draft was approved before being sent to the national associations to send their feedback. The voting stage in Seoul was the final step.

Until his demise in January 2022, former AIPS lawyer, François Carrard was the one spearheading the drafting of the revision of the statutes.
